AI Pubs RAIL Licenses
Motivation
Researchers within the scientific community rely on the sharing of code, models and applications. Openness of this kind, allows methods to be verified, saves time and resources, and allows researchers to more effectively build upon ideas that have come before. In an effort to support the artificial intelligence (“AI”) research community with tools to responsibly distribute models and source code, we have developed a set of OpenRAIL and Research-use only RAIL licenses that paper authors can use with assets related to their AI papers. Open Responsible AI Licenses (“OpenRAIL”) are licenses designed to permit free and open access, re-use, and downstream distribution of derivatives of AI artifacts as long as the use restrictions always apply (including to derivative works). A goal is to help standardize the language and increase integrity and enforceability of licenses with behavioral-use clauses. These licenses are built on a model for behavioral-use that aims to reduce the risk of negative outcomes and misuse of AI. Specifically, licenses for models (AIPubs OpenRAIL-M), source code (AIPubs OpenRAIL-S) are available. Researchers can use multiple licenses if they are distributing both models and source code. These licenses are similar to licenses used by BigScience and over 6000+ related repositories for AI models and code. Community feedback is essential, and we are grateful to receive feedback.
Where Can I Download an AI Pubs License?
What is an Open RAIL License?
Open Responsible AI Licenses (Open RAIL) are licenses designed to permit free and open access, re-use, and downstream distribution of derivatives of AI artifacts as long as the behavioral-use restrictions always apply (including to derivative works).
What is an AI Pubs Open RAIL License?
AI Pubs RAIL Licenses are designed specifically for cases where use is restricted to “research use”. As a result, some of the usage restrictions can be safely relaxed without compromising the how responsibly the model or source code is used.
Why Open?
The term “Open” is to indicate that the license enables royalty free access and flexible downstream use and re-distribution of the licensed material, and distribution of any derivatives of it.
Why Responsible?
Responsible AI licensing is a mechanism that is part of -and interacting with- a broader system of AI governance instruments and processes, such as Model Cards and Ethical Charters. Open RAIL licenses are designed to promote responsible downstream use and distribution of the model by including a set of use-based restrictions for which the model or source code cannot be used.
